A boring and melancholic Saturday made us wanna watch a movie. But there isn't much to choose from... no major blockbusters or any one of my favorite rom-coms. And I am sure as hell not going to pay to scare myself by watching The Conjuring. Not in the mood for an action film like R.I.P.D, actually never in the mood as always. Could have ogled at Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives but the reviews were pretty bad. In the end we settled for the first ever Singapore film to have won the prestigious award known as the Caméra d'Or or Golden Camera from the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Not sure what I am talking about?

Simplicity is the beauty of the whole show. And to think I was half expecting some really arty-farty complicated story line. The director of the movie Anthony Chen is the synonym of meticulous. He pays close attention to every single detail to ensure the viewers feel that they are watching a movie from the 90s. It was written on a piece of article that Chen visited more than 20 schools and saw over 8000 students, picking 2000 for auditions before he finally decided on casting Koh Jia Ler as the mischievous son in the movie.

Special mentions goes to the young actor and Yeo Yann Yann as they managed to bring out the essence of their characters very well. Jia Ler is a natural in the show and you will love to see him making a nuisance out of himself and at the same time having an imaginary headache if you were really his mother. But deep down the playful exterior of the boy lies a lonely latchkey kid who had just lost his grandfather. Yann Yann as the pregnant mother hired domestic help and as the movie progresses he forms a close bond with the maid.

The domineering mother then became increasingly jealous when the boy commented on trivial stuff such as the maid's cooking is better than hers. Eventually led to a few misunderstandings between her and the maid. She portrayed the role of a strong woman faced with ever increasing fears of being retrenched in a bad economy and coupled with the worries of a mother for her family. Due to the debts from her husband's stock investments, the family had no choice but to send the maid back before the contract is over.

Summary: Ilo Ilo is worth a watch as it tells a very surreal slice of Singaporean life along with a sense of humor and leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling inside you.

Was greeted with a wide selection of anti-pasti the moment we stepped into the restaurant. There were soft cheeses, tomatoes and different types of cured meats. The waitress brought us to our seats and offered to bring sparkling water. Once settled, we took a tour around the buffet area and the first thing I placed on my plate was parma ham and cantaloupe followed by fresh scallops. I feel that the texture of the ham blends really well with the sweetness of the melon. As for the scallops they were rather fresh and I could taste a tinge of sweetness in them. S took quite a bit of seafood such as crabs, lobsters and prawns. The prawns were comparable to the ones at The Line however the rest had nothing to rave about.

The highlight of the weekend buffet was the free flow foie gras promised to their customers. Every single piece is cooked to perfection and drizzled in balsamic vinegar. Needless to say I went for second servings therefore I am pretty sure that the chef will be able to recognize me even till now. Some of the other cooked food selection includes grilled meats, pizzas and stews. Both of us really enjoyed the cod fish as it was really soft and creamy. I had a bowl of lobster bisque which wasn't too thick and the taste was just right.

Did i mention that they have a cheese room as well? It was amazing. Never did I expect to find something like this in a buffet. I was in love the assorted jams and breads not to mention the variety of cheeses. Guess the Europeans do like their cheese very much. I randomly picked up some breads and cheeses plus some marmalade and currants to go with. There's this squid ink bread which is really warm and flavorful, definitely one of my favorites.

At this point I was quite full and didn't took much of the desserts. They had a wide array of cakes, puffs and a gelato station. Had some creme brulee and strawberry shortcake thingy and they were quite alright.

So far I have been to international buffets like Carousel, Melt and The Line and then this which is somewhat an European buffet. The downside of not being international is the lack of variety such as Japanese sashimi which I absolutely adored. On top of that, the buffet is a little on the pricey side. However, the really yummy spread and attentive service makes up for it. Like what people always say, "you gotta pay for the best" is somewhat true then.

Alright... where should I start? Oh! I have gotten back my results for last semester and it was pretty much a big FAT middle finger pointing to my face. A little background information... I am currently working and doing a part-time business degree with University of London in SIM. In my opinion, UOL is a bitch for having killer modules such as Econs, Macro, CF and so on. So obviously I failed Econs in year one (absolutely zero understanding in the concept) and had to retake the paper. As I was working and had no extra time for more lessons therefore picked the self-study option. Luckily I came across this website www.quickienomics.com which provided step-by-step videos of diagram drawings and clear explanations on how and why the lines move plus the reasons behind it. I swear that this is where you need to go to if you you want to pass this module. Apparently they offer workshops for the weaker students but I didn't go for it.

Why Marketing Why?!?! Was quite disappointed that I didn't clear everything and to rub salt on my wound... I really enjoyed studying the concepts of marketing and even considered about going into this particular field for my next job. Irony, irony. Oh well... I guess 5 THEORY mods for me this coming semester.

Onto something else... I did my VIRGIN PEDICURE! I told my friend that it was a very tiring experience having to sit there for 3 and a half hours then he looked at me incredulously and claims that the manicurist should be the one saying that. LOL. Really can't comprehend how in the world can those Tai-tais sit and do nothing for close to one-eighth of the day. Anyhoo... here's the results of me being patient.

The lady in the picture is a Vietnamese and she is super good at what she is doing. On top of that she is service-oriented and will ask for your opinions from time-to-time. But the only downside is the communication barrier as she can barely speak basic Chinese for that matter. I would recommend her if you live near Yishun area and want a reasonably priced gelish pedicure. However please be aware of this annoying loud cheena woman tending the shop as this bitch can really hard sell. She will pester you to add another few dollars for this and that. Glad that I am extremely gifted at rejecting these kind of people. HEHE.

Realized that I hardly does this type of extravagant beauty treatments... guess I am still trying to recover from the disheartening results through retail therapy. :(
